November Update

Howdy My FDFs,

As confessions go, this is a weird one, but truth be told, for me the most depressing day of the year is the day when we switch over from Daylight Savings Time back to Standard Time. (Greenwich Mean Time can be really mean!) I know it’s odd, because the other truth is I really do like the night (a lot of my favorite stuff happens during that period) and I should be looking forward to this switch-over from the diurnal to the nocturnal but for me, it always seems to feel a little like when the teacher would ring the bell signaling the end of recess and time to go back to class. But I guess I’ll just chalk that up to my general seasonal ennui that I feel each year when the sap starts running towards my feet right after the autumnal equinox, signaling the inexorable march towards winter. So there you have it, we’ll keep on dancing but we’ll have to do more of it in the dark.

In keeping with that theme, here are a few places where you can go work get your last DST dances in before the time change, then acclimate yourself to your PST dances from Friday, October 30 through Saturday, November 14, 2009.  See you on the dance floor!

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 1, 2009
Hope you remembered to turn your clocks back today as it’s the dreaded return to Standard Time. Well, the vampires will all be happy that there’s more darkness for them to stalk you in, but as you know, I’m conflicted.

That’s not the only conflict I’ll be facing as:
once again MAXWELL DEMILLE’S CICADA CLUB is closed for a private party, which I’m guessing we’re not invited to. MAXWELL DEMILLE’S CICADA CLUB – 617 S. Olive St. Los Angeles, CA 90014 http://www.clubcicada.com.

And, no your GPS isn’t lying to you. The wildly misnamed THIRD STREET SWINGERS will be giving you a place to dance today from 4-8pm, but not at the Santa Monica Third Street Promenade between Arizona and Wilshire. They’ve adopted new digs at the SANTA MONICA PIER near the carousel. There is still some debate over whether this move is a good idea. I still maintain IMO that it’s not, but decide for yourself, and if you go then let me know. I’d like to have a referendum on this.

But if you like it live and don’t mind having your Billy rocked, then rejoice because THE CROWN CITY BOMBERS are returning to FISHERMAN’S VILLAGE in Marina Del Rey. The WIACAIG al fresco show is goes from 1-4pm and reportedly they had a big turn out of dancers when they played there last month. THE CROWN CITY BOMBERS at FISHERMAN’S VILLAGE – 13755 Fiji Way, Marina Del Rey 90292

Helluva way to start a November.

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 2, 2009
Blues, Soul and R&B from the equally amazing KIRK FLETCHER BAND at HARVELLES SANTA MONICA- 1432 4th Street (near Broadway) Santa Monica http://www.harvelles.com.

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 2009
There’s some band called SESSIONS playing tonight at HSM. I’ve got no clue so you’re on your own. SESSIONS tonight at HARVELLES SANTA MONICA- 1432 4th Street (near Broadway) Santa Monica http://www.harvelles.com and it’s still another week until the Swing Kings take on BH again.

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 6, 2009
Blues lovers can come explore their own dark recesses with THE SOUL OF JOHN BLACK tonight at HARVELLES SANTA MONICA- 1432 4th Street (near Broadway) Santa Monica http://www.harvelles.com.

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 2009
Now that the Jacksons have lost Michael, and the Osmonds are off creating yet more Osmonds (Gods, wouldn’t you love to have the dental account for that clan) when they’re not recreating themselves on DWTS, my vote for best family act in LA goes to THE DELGADO BROTHERS who will be bringing their sweet familial form of Latin-tinged blues to HARVELLES SANTA MONICA- 1432 4th Street (near Broadway) Santa Monica http://www.harvelles.com.

I guess it’s that time of the month when all dancers are drawn to the Ventura Blvd haunts of THE SHIM SHAM ROOM, as it feeds you DJ’d swing and MORE BLUES, and who knows we might even get a little soul and R&B you can groove to as well. The party starts with a dance lesson for the Newbies at 7:30pm while you’re out getting a latte and finding parking. So you can comfortably arrive at 8pm then party on till 12am at which time they will unceremoniously dump our asses out on Ventura Blvd and tell us to go home. THE SHIM SHAM ROOM, like the phases of the moon, reappears tonight at NADIA’S RHYTHM ROOM – 14261 Ventura Blvd., Sherman Oaks, CA 91423-2714 www.nadiasrhythmroom.com/events.php

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 2009
And continuing our love of blues we have what will probably be the final 2009 installment of the THIRD STREET POTLUCK BLUES DANCE PARTY an open air WIACAIG dancing event where we meet to dance to Blues & whatever in the Santa Monica Third Street Promenade on the 2nd Sundays of the month from 6pm until they send us home.  Where the “potluck” part comes in is that YOU BRING THE MUSIC. While we’re mostly concentrating on blues-oriented music, we encourage participants to be brave and experiment. This is your chance to see how your moves work to music that is only limited by your imagination and creativity. We’ll have a basic collection of music running through all genres but, we encourage participants to ‘think outside the box’ and bring us something that will tickle our ears so much that the action reaches down to our feet and gets them moving.  We’ll have a laptop capable of playing CD’s and an Ipod connected to our sound system. So you can bring your choices on CD or if you have your own IPOD or MP3 player, you can bring it, so long as you have a compatible adapter.  We’ll be kickin’ it blues style starting again this Sunday afternoon in the Third Street Promenade between Arizona and Wilshire.  If you need anymore info or have any questions, email me at darrellh@dga.org. And tell everybody to come on out and join the party because we’re going to have great time.  Let’s make this final dance a benefit for the homeless. If you have any extra warm clothing in your closet that will be better served by keeping someone from freezing, bring them along and we’ll see that they get to a local shelter.

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 2009
And there’s always Blues, Soul and R&B to be had with the KIRK FLETCHER BAND at HARVELLES SANTA MONICA- 1432 4th Street (near Broadway) Santa Monica http://www.harvelles.com.

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 2009
But if you want your music live and breathing, don’t forget you can get your blues grooves on with JT ROSS THE HAMONICA BOSS tonight  at HARVELLES SANTA MONICA- 1432 4th Street (near Broadway) Santa Monica http://www.harvelles.com.

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 2009
If you opt for the former then you’re not going to do better than local favorite GARY ALLEGRETTO AND THE SUGAR DADDIES when they bring another of their blowout shows to the stage at HARVELLES SANTA MONICA- 1432 4th Street (near Broadway) Santa Monica http://www.harvelles.com. $10 cover

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 14, 2009
As the Python’s used to be so fond of saying “And now for something completely different.” I’m sure that a Google search would give me more information about the band playing at HSM this evening as their title is rather unique. They’re called LEO NOCENTELLI AND THE METERS EXPERIENCE, but I really don’t have time to vet them fully right now. So they could be the greatest thing since Thai food was introduced to LA, but I can’t really tell you one way of the other. But given my own experience with meters (especially the parking variety) and our nation’s steadfast refusal to adopt the metric system, I do think the nomenclature is unfortunate at best.  But if you’re adventurous, or have more Google time than me, then for your (hopefully) dancing pleasure LEO NOCENTELLI AND THE METERS EXPERIENCE at HARVELLES SANTA MONICA- 1432 4th Street (near Broadway) Santa Monica http://www.harvelles.com.

And it’s the second outing at the new digs as one of our favorite blues venues, THE JUKE returns to NADIA’S RHYTHM ROOM in Sherman Oaks. The good news is you’ll still be getting some of the best canned blues-oriented music you’re going to get. The better news is parking should prove easier and you may not need so many shirt changes now that the venue’s ceiling wasn’t designed for Lilliputians. The rest of the story remains the same: they start off the first hour of with their own dance class/seminar called The Blues Muse at 9:00pm. Then from 10pm till 2am, it’s time to get down to the music for the rest of the night. You get all this for $8! Let’s make their grand re-opening night one to remember. THE JUKE at NADIA’S RHYTHM ROOM – 14261 Ventura Blvd., Sherman Oaks, CA 91423-2714. http://heptothejive.com and/or www.nadiasrhythmroom.com
