LAist.com, a popular blog covering Los Angeles activities, covered the introduction of Blues Dancing to the L.A. area and the efforts of Blues Kitchen to share the dance with everyone.
Here is their description of the evolution of Blues:
With all its hustle, the flips and fast paced jittering, swing dancing can be intimidating. But as lindy exhanges across the nation became bigger deals in the early part of this century, party goers danced and drunk their way into the night begetting a much slower, groovier and inebriated style. Enter blues dancing… the resurgence, at least.
“Blues dancing evolved from dark rooms, groovy music and lots of liquor,” explained Tim O’Neill, who teaches the form in Sherman Oaks. “It’s kind of like the evil cousin of swing dancing.”
I don’t know about calling Blues “the Evil Cousin” of swing dancing. I prefer to think of it as sensually greeting the new day from the dark side of dawn, but whether you like sound bites or poetry, it is kinda fun to have our own Tim O’Neill and Whitton Frank, who started Blues Kitchen, recognized by the non-dancing public.
Congratulations!
